The S+ by ResMed is is the world’s first non-contact sleep tracking system that helps you analyze and improve your sleep from the very first night. That’s at least what their brochure and website say. In this post we are going to provide a concise review on it.
The S+ comes in a well designed box and looks definitely looks apart. The box contents includes a main adapter with 2 USB port, a USB to mini USB cable to power the S+, user manual and the S+. The mains adapter is convenient as it all both your phone and the S+ to be mains-powered without needed an extra spare mains socket! The S+ itself looks very sleek and although it is made entirely of plastic, it looks very professional and does not feel “plasticky”.
To use the S+, you have to download the resmed app on your phone and then connect to the S+ using bluetooth. The app interface looks ok and connects to the S+ without issue.
On the technical side, the S+ claims to monitor breathing during sleep without contact with the body. This may be true but it seems that to get a “good” reading, the S+ needs to have a good line of sight of the subject’s chest. Also, to monitor the breathing, it looks like the S+ monitor when the chest rises.
The S+ is capable of monitoring sleep disruptions and differentiating between light and deep sleep. The S+ seems to have a motion sensor that monitors movement.
The S+ seems like an OK device to monitor sleep pattern but it’s not an accurate device that can be used to monitor breathing as they claim to do. On the other hand, it can definitely monitor light and noise level accurately.
The monitoring is turned on the phone app prior to sleep by clicking the “sleep” button. All the data collection is done by the phone and a score is given when the subject click on the “snooze” button on the app.
